Cultists attack Bayelsa community, kill 1

One person has been killed and others sustained injuries as suspected cultists numbering over 30 yesterday attacked the popular Tombia area of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

According to witnesses, the suspected cultists came with guns and other dangerous weapons around 07:00pm on Wednesday night and began shooting sporadically, a situation that led the death of a passerby.

Daily Trust also gathered that the shooting led to a stampede where several market women were injured at a popular roundabout which serves as the gateway to Yenagoa and other cities in the state.

Narrating the incident, some of the victims told Daily Trust that the boys attacked anyone in their part and that the only resistance came from some vigilantes along Brass Road.

Reacting to the incident, a businessman in the area, who declined to be quoted for fear of being attacked, confirmed to newsmen that the security situation in the Tombia area and other parts of the state was worrisome and pathetic.

He expressed disgust at the noticeable laxity in the security architecture of the state, and therefore called on the administration of Governor Douye Diri to do the right thing before many residents were killed from armed attacks.

The police spokesman in the state, SP Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident, saying it was one of the cultists that was shot by a rival gang and that his corpse had been deposited in the mortuary, adding that investigation was ongoing.
