Umahi apologises to Anyim, Egwu to end Ebonyi rift

The apology is meant to quell the bickering between the governor and his predecessors

Ebonyi governor David Umahi drifted off a groundbreaking event on Monday to apologise to former Senate president Pius Anyim and former Ebonyi governor Sam Egwu.

He also called on his aides and followers to shun negative utterances that might jeopardise peace in Ebonyi.

The harsh words have especially increased since Umahi defected from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress amidst wide speculations concerning his reason.

The apology is meant to quell the bickering between the governor and his predecessors in the state, and connected to their differences along party lines.

“I continue to say that our change of party is not for personal interest but for the interest of the people,” he said.

Speaking at groundbreaking ceremony for a 2oo-unit estate by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria at Enuokor Umuchima village in Uburu, Ohanzara local government area of the state, he said his major reason for joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) was for the interest of the people, not personal.

“And let me public publicly say it here, I have directed that nobody should abuse anybody even if I’m abused, it goes with the job, don’t respond back to them but always put any distorted information straight.

“I’m the father of the state and I should be ashamed of myself if the state of Ebonyi is allowed to go into bitterness and disunity.

“So I have decided to move forward, I have decided to forgive all. And the course of this those that might have been hurt cos I take responsibility of all my government officials and for all my supporters I therefore offer apology,” he pleaded.

Similarly,13 serving council Chairmen under the umbrella of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Ebonyi state chapter have also called on Sen. Anyim and his allies ens to shun harsh criticism against the state governor.

ALGON in a statement issued on Monday said, “Anyim did not have the moral right to fault Governor David Umahi on any issue, so we are calling on him to stop attacking the governor Umahi.”

Anyim, had in an open letter he signed and released to the public recently claimed that their major offence committed is that we refused to follow Gov. Umahi in his political adventure.

“We do not know when belonging to parties of one’s choice has become an offence against a Governor or means fighting a Governor,” Anyim had said.
