‘Developers encouraging building collapse’

The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has expressed concern that building collapse in the country is being encouraged by developers of properties who often employ quacks.

The Chairman of Builders Congress 2020, Aliyu A. Oba, who spoke to journalists at the weekend, said when clients (property developers) employ quacks instead of professional builders who are mandated by law to execute and manage building production, they create fertile ground for building collapse.

Oba, who said CORBON was determined to fight the menace, advised clients to always engage professionals when embarking on projects.

He said, “The contribution to quackery in Nigeria is largely by the general public because you choose to give your property to whoever to develop for you. It is your right and responsibility to give it to qualified personnel from design stage to finish.

“It is difficult in our own space to control clients because quackery starts from clients who hire unprofessional builders.”

The congress which will hold from December 8 and 9, according to the chairman of the committee, will be virtual and physical in order to manage the event with respect to COVID-19 protocols and 79 new builders would be inducted at the event.
