Lagos by-elections: APC, PDP clash over vote-buying

Ahead of Saturday’s by-elections in Lagos, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday said it has uncovered plan by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to engage in vote-buying.

The party said its intelligence revealed that the opposition has concluded plan to pay N5000 per vote with a view to undermine the process.

Spokesman of the APC, Mr. Seye Oladejo, who disclosed this in a statement, called on the security agents “to be vigilant to arrest any situation that is capable of disrupting the electoral process and INEC to remain impartial and deliver on their responsibility to the nation.”

The APC’s statement followed protest by some residents of the Lagos East constituency made up of five local governments where they alleged plan by the opposition to buy votes.

The residents, however, asked the INEC, Nigeria Police and other security agencies to be at alert, warning that they would resist any plot to undermine the process.

But the PDP has dismissed the allegation, describing it as “laughable and unbelievable.”

Responding, the PDP described the APC’s allegation as a clear case of imminent defeat for the ruling party.

Spokesman of the PDP, Taofiq Gani, said all votes would be voluntarily given to PDP “to reflect the disenchantment with the APC candidates who have displayed highest level of desperation to contest in areas they do not qualify to so contest.”
