Insecurity: Shun banditry, kidnapping – MACBAN warn herders

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has warned herders and all other members of the group to shy away from committing banditry, kidnapping, and all other forms of criminality in the country.

The group told the members that, MACBAN ” Is an association that is peaceful and does not accept criminality and ready to expose bad ones among them.”

MACBAN’s National Secretary, Usman Baba Ngelzarma, gave the warning on Sunday while fielding questions from our correspondent in Jos during the inauguration of the new state executive members of the group in Plateau state, held on Sunday.

Ngelzarma emphasised that they were not only in the state to inaugurate the executive members of the group’s branch but to sensitize them on the need to remain in peace wherever they found themselves especially their host communities, adding that they were the most victims when violence occurred in an area.

“We are using this opportunity to sensitize all our members against what is currently happening in the country. We sensitize them against farm destruction. We call on them to shun kidnapping activities, banditries, and any form of criminality. When there is violence in an area, pastoralists become most victims.

“They are always at the receiving end because they move with their cows everywhere. Their houses will be burnt and caws stolen.

He however said the high rate of crime being committed in Nigeria now was not only committed by Fulani herders as alleged by some quarters, saying, “The fact remains that no society doesn’t have criminality in its folds.

“We know that there are criminals among the pastoralists but it doesn’t mean all criminalities were committed by Fulani.”

He explained that many pastoralists could commit crimes but that didn’t mean they were Fulani because not every Fulani was a member of MACBAN, saying that those loyal to the group often listen to them.

He further debunked the allegation that the leadership of the group did bribe security officials to free criminals or members of the group who are committing a crime, explaining that rather than bribing, the group sensitized members on the need to bring out culprit among them.

He said, “These are mere allegations. MACBAN does not condone criminality. It does not in any way support a criminal.

“It does go security to free a criminal. This a peaceful association that has northern traditional rulers as chairman and trustee members.”
