No fewer than 300 members of the Ogun State branch of the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) have been screened for cataract, glaucoma and other sight problems.
The free eye screening exercise, according to the state chairman of RTEAN, Titilayo Akibu, was organised as part of the union’s efforts at reducing the carnage on our roads during the festive period.
Akibu, who spoke through the state secretary of the union, Tiwalade Akingbade, flagged off the exercise at the RTEAN secretariat in Abeokuta, the state capital, saying the exercise was also aimed at educating their members on the need to cultivate good healthy lifestyle.
He urged members of the association to always take caution, exercise patience and obey traffic rules while driving in this festive period to prevent accidents.
He said: “The eyes are the most important organ of the body. An amputee can still drive a vehicle but a blind person cannot drive. If your sight is bad, you cannot drive a vehicle very well,” he said.
The Commander of Obantoko area of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kehinde Oyeyemi, disclosed that the state command of the corps had put in place measures to ensure safety on the road, before, during and after the festive period.
