Drug-resistant diseases may kill 10m people annually – FAO

The Food and Agriculture Organization has warned that 10 million people may die every year by 2050 from drug-resistant diseases globally.

The FAO Country Representative, Fred Kafeero, at the inauguration of the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week on Thursday in Abuja, said within the next 10 years, antimicrobial use in livestock alone  might double to keep pace with the demands of the growing population.

He said livestock production in low-income countries including Nigeria could decline by up to 11 percent by 2050 because of antibiotics-related resistance.
