Assembly directs govt to pay 15 months outstanding salaries of disengaged teachers

Bauchi State House of Assembly has adopted a motion directing the state government to ensure the speedy payment of disengaged and re-engaged primary school teachers who are being owed between eight to 15 months’ salaries.

The Speaker,  Hon. Abubakar  Suleiman disclosed this at plenary shortly after the report of the House Committee on Public Petition and Human Rights, which looked into the issue was laid by the Acting Chairman of the Committee, Bakoji Aliyu Bobbo.

Findings by the committee confirmed that the affected teachers were not given the required one-month salary in lieu of notice before their disengagement and there were discrepancies in the re-engagement period of those disengaged.

The Committee also found that the outstanding salary of the re-engaged teachers is more than one billion naira and the salaries of the 5000 NTI/DLS teachers have not been paid to SUBEB by the ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs during their disengagement period.

The Committee recommended the payment of the salaries covering the period.

It also recommended that the government should constitute a high-powered committee to revalidate the total number of teachers affected and the House should direct the government to ensure the speedy payment of salaries of the affected teachers after revalidation.
