A total of 1,650 women have been empowered with a radio set each in Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State to monitor programmes on children’s health, specifically on disease control.
The gesture was provided as part of the World Pneumonia Day (WPD) marked every year on November 12 to raise awareness about pneumonia, the world’s leading infectious killer of children under the age of five years.

The Programme Manager, Inspiring Project, undertaken by Save the Children, Abdullahi Magama, said the radio sets were given to the women to monitor information on pneumonia and other childhood killer diseases.
The radio would also enable the women to participate in the monthly interactive radio programme from their homes.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional leaders from the area, the District Head of Kiyawa, Mal. Adamu Aliyu Kiyawa, lamented inadequate funding to the health sector, which he observed had made it very difficult for many families to get accessible and affordable basic healthcare, especially in the rural areas.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the donors for the enlightenment programme which enabled them to understand and identify some symptoms of pneumonia infection.
