Why we are investing in basic education – Obaseki

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has said he will continue to invest in the education of children in the state so as to provide them with the needed skills to compete favourably with their peers across the globe.

The governor gave the assurance during a party organised by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Obaseki/Shaibu Support Group to celebrate his victory in the September 19, governorship election.

He said teachers in Edo played a key role in ensuring that he was re-elected for a second term in office.

“The Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EDOBEST) programme will not stop but will get better as our teachers will be our priority as a government. They play a significant role in shaping the future of our children,” Obaseki said.

He noted that the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa were due to lack of education and requisite skills on the part of indigenes who became violent and attacked other nationalities who got employed following their superior educational qualification and skills.

“EDOBEST will surely check such occurrences in Edo State and teachers have a great role to play in developing the Edo child.

“Before we came to power, teachers were looked down on. Today, following the efforts of my administration, the difference is clear as our teachers are now showing commitment in discharging their responsibilities and our children are the better for it,” he said.

Also speaking, SUBEB Executive Chairman Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe commended Governor Obaseki for his support and commitment in transforming the education sector in Edo State, saying teachers supported him because of his commitment in changing the narrative of the state’s education sector.
