No more Pension for Tinubu, Fashola, others, says Sanwo-olu

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced his intention to repeal the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007), which provides for payment of pension and other entitlements to former Governors and their Deputies in the state.

Sanwo-olu disclosed this on Tuesday during the presentation of the 2021 budget before the state lawmakers.

Sanwo-olu, who said the bill would be sent to the Lagos Assembly for legislative approval, stressed that the abolition of pension for former governors and deputies will reduce the cost of governance.

 “Mr. Speaker and Honourable Members of the House, in light of keeping the costs of governance low and to signal selflessness in public service, we will be sending a draft executive bill to the House imminently for the repeal of the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007), which provides for payment of pension and other entitlements to former Governors and their Deputies,” he said.

The national leader of All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu served as the Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. He was succeeded by the current Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, who served for eight years.

Akinwunmi Ambode, who succeeded Fashola served for a single term, losing his re-election bid in his party to incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu in 2019.
