Customs records N1.6bn from undervalued goods

The Federal Operations Unit, Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) generated N1.6 billion from under-valued imported consignments in Lagos between January and September 2020.

The zone comprises Lagos and Ogun States. The Controller, Comptroller Usman Yahaya, 117 units of exotic vehicles were also seized during the period.

Yahatlya who reiterated the Unit’s commitment in ensuring that revenue accrual to the Federal Government is not lost to desperate and unpatriotic smugglers, said the unit was able to block all areas of revenue leakages, through which goods are smuggled into the country.

He said, “117 units of vehicles and general goods were seized for various offenses worth a Duty Paid Value of N17.49 billion.

“The Unit had in the past intercepted containers laden with pump action rifles, Tramadol drugs and smuggled cannabis among other dangerous substances and goods that would have succeeded in getting into wrong hands. We remain resolute at enforcing the federal government’s ban on the importation of all prohibited goods into the country; especially now that the land borders are closed.

“Importers are hereby, advised to make proper declarations and ensure compliance with the extant clearance procedure. However, smugglers are also warned to desist from sabotaging the nation’s economy through their activities.”
