Kaduna meeting: Don picks hole in Northern govs’ resolution

A lecturer of Political Science at Kaduna State University (KASU), Dr. Tukur Abdulkadir, has said there is a disconnect between the northern governors and the people they are “purportedly governing.”

He made the assertion following the mixed feelings that trailed last week’s resolution at the end of a high-powered meeting of governors of the 19 northern states in Kaduna.

Dr Abdulkadir, while expressing disappointment that the governors had failed to address the major challenges in the north, including the attacks of northerners in some parts of the South-South and South-East during the EndSARS protest, said the governors failed to speak on an issue that poses an existential threat to the corporate existence of Nigeria.

The don, who was speaking with Daily Trust, said the governors should have “openly and unapologetically condemned the activities” of ethnic chauvinists against their people.

He accused them of either trying to sweep the problem under the carpet or of reluctance to admit that northerners had issues in other parts of the country.

“They would have come out to condemn whatever happened to their citizens but you don’t find this kind of attachment and concern on the part of leaders especially from the northern part of Nigeria,” he said.

Summarising the entire message of the governors’ resolution, the political scientist said “In essence, the northern governors were by their resolution only trying to pacify the people of northern Nigeria and as usual trying to ensure that they maintain the status quo, that is just the bottom line.”
