Eastern Nigeria Peoples Assembly cautions on restructuring

A geo-political group, the Eastern Nigeria People’s Assembly has cautioned against using restructuring to create tension in the country.

Its President-General, Usani Uguru Usani, at a press conference in Abuja, said restructuring, touted as a panacea to Nigeria’s problems, would not eliminate existing challenges without a reconstruction of ethical values.

“The subject of restructuring, which is canvassed as Nigeria’s ultimate panacea should not be used to infuse further tension in our geo-politics. Restructuring does not begin and end with geographical claims of landscape as some persons tend to convey,” he said.

Usani, a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, said the group drew its pool of members from 10 states that were carved out from the old Eastern Region.

He said changes in geo-physical scope without ethical reconstruction of the nation’s values and institutional remodelling would “only be begging for another round of agitation for further restructuring.

According to him, return to regionalism may be a viable option for the homogeneous identities of ethnographic nationalities, but not a sure choice for some others.

He said the quest for nationhood should be guided by certain aspirations and the results should reflect demands.

He said his group was committed to a continuous system overhaul for a country that could stand out in the global dynamic space.
