The United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) and the Kano State Government have trained 1,500 pupils and 300 school mentors on how to effectively manage children’s clubs in schools.
Kano Chronicle reports that the participants were drawn from 300 Integrated Qur’anic Schools (IQS) across the state.
Speaking at the training, Unicef’s Senior Education Manager, Michael Bande, said it was aimed at empowering the pupils and the facilitators of children’s clubs on how to effectively fit into the operation of their respective School-Based Management Committees (SBMC).
According to him, the training will enable the children realise their potentials, as well as their basic rights to quality education and appreciate teamwork.
“They will learn how to influence peers within and out of school on retention, completion and transition, and engage SBMC leaders effectively.
“It will provide them some basic understanding of gender and equity considerations in relating with school children, as well as help them articulate agenda that can be fed into their respective SBMC’s micro and macro School Improvement Plans.,” he explained.
