Also, Regan memorial Baptist Girls School Yaba, Lagos, beat Baptist Academy Obanikoro, Lagos, in the debate with the topic: ‘The importation of Used Electrical and Electronics Equipment (UEEE) should be banned.’
The quiz was organized by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) to mark the International E-waste Day.
The Day is celebrated October 14, to stimulate awareness on the effect of e-waste to arouse political will and public action.
The Director General of NESREA, Prof. Aliyu Jauro, said the essence of involving the children in this year’s International e- waste day is to catch them young.
“When you educate somebody from childhood they will grow with the culture, in Nigeria most of us lack the culture of proper waste disposal, but when you educate them at the early stage they will grow and get old with it and it becomes part of them, so you don’t need to tell them about it when they are old.”
Prof. Jauro maintained that at the end of the project, they hope to teach all those involved the best way to go about it and have it replicated in other states of the federation and even other African countries as that is the essence of this pilot project.
“We are going to do a lot of sensitisation for our own benefits,” he added.
At least six schools, each from the six geopolitical zones participated in the quiz. Besides the winners, the others are, Bankys Private School, Abuja; Brilliant Bay Int’l school, Dutse, Jigawa State; and Salvation International School, Lagos.
