Anarchists unleash mayhem by night in Asaba

Residents of Asaba, Delta State State capital woke up Thursday morning to the gory sight of charred public utilities, including the Federal Road Safety Corps Office along the Onitsha Benin Expressway.

The newly constructed ultramodern Delta State Urban Renewal Park and newly built water fountain at the heart of the Benin-Onitsha expressway main terminus  were completely razed down, alongside two cars and their contents.

The Police Sentry Post, bus stop stands, streetlights, road medians, lawn barricades and other public amenities were also destroyed by the night marauders.

A Daily Trust correspondent witnessed a procession of 20 armed men and women at 9pm on Wednesday marching along the Onitsha-Benin expressway.

Earlier on Wednesday afternoon the #ENDSARS protesters had shut down traffic flow on Nnebisi road, the main township access road in Asaba.

As at the time of filing this report, there was apprehension in the Koka axial terminal junction on the Onitsha Benin Expressway as residents scampered for safety following news of the return of the anarchists.

Delta state governor Ifeanyi Okowa has announced a 48-hour curfew starting 6pm Thursday.

According to the governor, all public and private primary and secondary schools are closed for studies from Thursday till 2nd of November.

He said the curfew and close down of schools was necessitated by the burning of government buildings, armed robbery and other unwholesome activities of hoodlums and anarchists who have hijacked the #EndSARS protest.
