Federal lawmakers demand probe of Lekki killings

Federal lawmakers have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to launch a comprehensive investigation into the killings of protesters in Lekki tollgate in Lagos.

The legislators, in separate statements also demanded justice for all the victims of the nationwide protests.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Senator Ali Ndume, urged Buhari to comply with the Senate’s resolution asking him to address the nation on the EndSARS protests.

He also urged the protesters to be well-coordinated under a leadership and give the government the opportunity to implement their demands.

Also, a former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, said the right to peaceful assembly remained guaranteed by the Constitution and any unilateral imposition of curfews was unconstitutional.

He, however, stressed the need to arrest and prosecute criminals, who had taken advantage of the protests to cause loss of lives and properties.

Also, senator representing Osun Central, Ajibola Basiru, in a statement, condemned the “clear lackadaisical attitude of the federal executive to the lingering anarchy and destruction of lives and property.”

Chairman, Senate Committee on Women Affairs, Betty Apiafi, described the Lekki killings as “inhumane act on the part of the government under a supposed democratic dispensation.”
