AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF-Nigeria) has called on the National Assembly to create unhindered access to youth-friendly reproductive health services for for girls.

This is according to a statement by Steve Aborisade, the Advocacy Manager for AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

The call is in commemoration of the 2020 International Day of the Girl Child.

“In commemoration of the IDGC, we are working tirelessly to support the welfare of the girl child.

“We have also called on the National Assembly to help girls stay free from HIV and STIs, protect their human rights, and help them gain self-confidence by staying in school and taking control of their health.”

Coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, Terri Ford, the Chief of Global Policy and Advocacy, disclosed that girls need to stay safe and confident to achieve their goals.

“Since 2016, AHF has made young women and girls a top priority across our global bureaus with our Girls Act program—and with the ongoing pandemic, it’s even more important that girls everywhere are able to stay safe and healthy and have the opportunities to achieve their goals.”

The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated globally on October 11 every year.

The theme for the 2020 International Day of the Girl Child “Empowered Girls = Brighter Future”, seeks to celebrate girls worldwide, keeping them healthy and confident.

Daily Trust reports that members of AHF-Nigeria Girls Act had interfaced with the House of Representatives Committee on AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Control (ATM) at the National Assembly on the need to improve the wellbeing of girls in the country, particularly the need to create unhindered access for girls to access reproductive health services that is youth friendly.
