Customs nabs Dubai-bound passenger with 5,342 ATM cards in Kano

A middle aged man, Sanusi Labaran, has been arrested by customs operatives at the Malam Aminu kano International Airport (MAKIA) carrying 5,342 Automated Teller machines (ATM) heading to Dubai.

The Controller of Customs in charge of Kano/Jigawa command, Comptroller Nasir Ahmed, said the suspect, who was nabbed on Sunday while trying to board an Ethiopian flight, concealed the items in a beans bag.

Other items recovered from the suspect include 7 memory card, one MTN SIM card and his international passport.

Ahmed said the command is poised to continue to support the federal government anti-money laundering efforts, saying that the command had equally intensified revenue generation, having recorded N4.6 bn revenue generated in two months of August and September.

The suspect was later handed over to the Zonal coordinator of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), Sanusi Aliyu, who assured of the commission’s readiness to thoroughly investigate the matter.

“The EFCC will not only stop at investigating the person but tracing the owners of the ATM and the reasons to ship them to dubai.

“The service will notify the customs of the progress of the investigation.

“Once a Prima facie is established, the suspect and all accomplices will be charge to court for law to take its cause,” he said.

“This raises a very strong suspicion and a red flag.

“We believe he is not alone but has others working with him.

“His residence permit of Dubai shows he is in this business for a while,” he added.
