US, UK, EU, India greet Nigeria on 60th independence anniversary

The governments of United States, United Kingdom and India and the European Union have extended warm wishes to Nigeria on her 60th independence anniversary.

U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, in a statement, said both Nigeria and the U.S share important democratic values and a similar entrepreneurial spirit.

“We congratulate the Nigerian people for your commitment to tackling corruption, strengthening democratic institutions, and leveraging Nigerian entrepreneurship to promote economic recovery.

“Even now, the people-to-people partnerships between our two nations are helping Nigeria combat the threat posed by COVID-19,” he said.

Pompeo assured of U.S continued support to Nigeria as it seeks to collaborate with its neighbours to expand regional peace and security and counter violent extremists.

‘Nigerians make enormous contributions in UK’

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that Nigerians make enormous contributions across the United Kingdom.

Johnson stated this in a congratulatory letter to President Mohammadu Buhari, dated September 30, 2020, and posted on the Twitter handle of the British High Commission in Nigeria.

He said both countries, as Iong-standing friends and Commonwealth members, enjoy a close, forward-looking relationship.

“This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary spirit of the Nigerian people which I not only experienced first hand during my visit in 2017, but I see on display every day in the UK, as Nigerians make enormous contributions across our society.

“I look forward to many more years of friendship between the UK and Nigeria, and for the chance for us to speak in person again soon,” John said.

Indian Minister of External Affairs, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in a Twitter post, said recent exchanges between both countries “affirm the strengthening of our traditional friendship.”

The Head of European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Ketil Karlsen, in a video post on Twitter, recited the second stanza of the National Anthem to felicitate Nigerians world over.
