Law students write Malami, Akpata over election

The 15 chapters of the Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN) have written to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), over the association’s just concluded elections.

The letter, signed by the spokesman of the association, Isyaku Danlawan, dated September 21, 2020, was also forwarded to the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata Esq.

The association appealed to the AGF, who is also its grand patron, to “bring an end to this quagmire” of constitutional provision said to have been violated by the presidential candidate.

This followed the conclusion, in September, of the 4th National Convention of LAWSAN in Abuja which was also used to conduct the national election of the association.

The result produced Blessing Agbomhere as president of the association. But the 15 chapters claim that being a 500L student, he had emerged outside the provision of Section 16(1)(a) of the association’s constitution that said only 400L students, who must present their 300L results, were qualified for the election.

Agbomhere had explained that the election was in accordance with the rules, adding that he won by an overwhelming majority.

Also, in communique, the 15 chapters criticised the election and withdrew their membership of the association “as presently constituted and administered until our concerns are addressed, failing which we shall convene a new election at the instance of our overwhelming members.”
