Religious, community leaders pledge peaceful coexistence in Jos North

Religious and community leaders, as well as youths and women, from Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State have pledged to live in peace and enhance economic development and tranquillity.

The resolution was reached at a two-day training workshop organised by African Initiative for Peace Building and Advancement (AfriPeace) in collaboration with Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA).

The programme is aimed at impacting knowledge and building capacities of community leaders and leaders of community security outfits on peace building and how to resolve conflicts to enhance sustainable peace.

Participants were drawn from Dutse Uku, Angwan Rimi, Angwan Rukuba and Rikkos all in Jos North LGA.

The resource person at the programme, Godwin Okoko, urged the people to imbibe the culture of reconciliation, forgiveness, love, tolerance and respect for peace.

Okoko, who is also the Director of Programme Plateau State Peace Building Agency, stressed on the need for constant dialogue and the ability to accommodate one another.

He charged the participants to always come up with superior arguments to counter hate and misleading messages/contents.

The Director of Administration, Operation Rainbow, Keziah Dung, who represented the Permanent Secretary Cabinet and Special Duties, Cornelius Shualbel, lauded AfriPeace for the programme and its efforts in peace building.

AfriPeace Programme Officer, Comfort Zawaya, in her address, said the mandate of the organization is to foster and build sustainable peace in communities in Plateau, Kaduna and Kano being the focal states.

She said the essence of the training was to impact knowledge, build the capacities and improve the skills of community security apparatus and community leaders in peace building and conflict resolution.

According to her, everyone has a role to play in the peace process in the state and nation at large.

Some of the participants, Ms Atong Markus and Ibrahim Shuaib, lauded the training and AfriPeace for impacting knowledge on peace building process and how to resolve conflict for sustainable peace in their respective communities.
