Fuel price, electricity tariff: Life unbearable for us, workers tell FG

The organised labour has told the Federal Government that the recent fuel price and electricity tariff hikes have subjected Nigerians to a lot of hardships.

The labour leadership expressed this concern in Abuja on Tuesday at a meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

The president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, said the twin hikes had aggravated the economic hardship facing Nigerians.

He said Nigerian workers, who had lost their jobs and means of livelihoods due to COVID-19 challenges, were being forced to make further sacrifices through an unbearable increase in prices of fuel and electricity tariff.

He said the hikes had only worsened the plight of workers on fixed wages, adding that the situation had eroded the gains of the minimum wage.

Similarly, the president of the Trade Union Congress, Quadri Olaleye, said Nigerian workers were losing about 15 per cent of their wages as a result of the various price hikes.

Olaleye called on the Federal Government to do the needful as workers were facing a lot of hardship.

Ngige solicited the labour’s collaboration in the quest for socio-economic recovery from the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.  (NAN)
