The Chairman of Sabon Gari Local Government Area in Kaduna State, Muhammad Usman, has attributed the drop in crime rate in his area to the recent closure of brothels and beer parlours.

The closure followed the enforcement of a by-law on the control and regulation of the sale of liquor, spirits and other related offences passed by the council.

Arewa Trust Weekly reports that the LGA recently began closing down beer parlours and brothels after the law was signed following which the owners of the recreational centres instituted a court action which was eventually struck out by a Kaduna State High Court.

Usman said on June 20, 2020, the council enacted the Control and Regulation of the Sale of Liquor and/or Spirits and other Related Offences Bye-Law No. 2 in accordance with the Fourth Schedule of the 1999 Constitution and the state Local Government Law No. 3 of 2018.

He said the Bye-Law No. 2 of 2020 was also made in accordance with the power of the local government to regulate the storage, distribution, marketing and sale of liquor and spirits adding that the feedback received from residents indicated that the implementation of the law had resulted in the reduction of crime rate in the area.

“Majority of residents are happy with what the council did.

“There is no tension or pressure against the law.

“The liquor and spirits sellers in the area were operating illegally because they did not have license to operate, as statutorily required by the laws.

After the Kaduna State High Court sitting in Dogarawa struck out their case, the council instituted another case against the beer parlour owners for an order to close their businesses since they were operating without license,” he said.
