Arsenal, Liverpool begin 2020/21 EPL season with victories

Arsenal made a convincing start to the new Premier League season as debutants Willian and Gabriel impressed in a 3-0 win at Fulham.

Former Chelsea winger Willian had a hand in all three goals and Gabriel – a £23m signing from Lille – scored in his first game in English football.

Both sides have played and won at Wembley – twice for the Gunners – in the 48 days since the last Premier League season finished.

Alexandre Lacazette scored the opener from close range after Willian’s effort was saved.

Centre-back Gabriel then scored from Willian’s corner with his shoulder. Willian, who also hit a post from a free-kick, picked out Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng with a perfect cross-field ball and the captain curled home Arsenal’s third.

In the same vein, defending champions, Liverpool began their league title defence with a hard fought 4-3 win over Leeds United.

Liverpool who have now gone 60 games unbeaten at home with Mohammed Salah scoring a hatrick while Virgil van Dijk scored his 10th Premier League goal for the champions.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side, back in the top flight after 16 years, were impressive throughout and came from behind to level on three occasions.

But Salah – who scored two spot-kicks – had the last word to ensure Jurgen Klopp’s team start with a win.

Jack Harrison, Patrick Bamford and Mateusz Klich all scored for Leeds.

Leeds are the first promoted side to score 3+ goals away at the reigning champions in the Premier League since Hull lost 3-4 vs Man United in November 2008.
