First flight to arrive Enugu airport Wednesday

One week after the reopening of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, flight operations have not started at the terminal, Daily Trust reports.

The federal government had, on August 30, reopened the airport to the excitement of the people of the state.

Minister of Aviation Senator Hadi Sirika had declared the airport open for flight operation after the rehabilitation of the runway and installation of many critical flight safety equipment.

A day before the reopening, the new runway received the first flight conveying the minister and other dignitaries.

On Sunday when it was reopened, two flights also landed at the newly expanded runway.

A former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who was one of the dignitaries at the reopening, said flight operations should commence immediately at the airport.

But Daily Trust learnt that the first commercial flight to be operated by Air Peace would land at the airport.

Spokesman of the airline, Mr. Stanley Olisa also confirmed to our correspondent that the airline has started selling tickets for the Enugu flight and the first flight would land in the south-eastern state WednesdayF.

The General Manager, Corporate Affairs of the Federal Airports Authority Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, said the airport remains open and ready for flight operations.

“We have declared the airport open for airlines as the minister said during the reopening,” she said.
