The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has advocated for more opportunities for women employment in the country.

The Chief Human Resource Officer of IBEDC, Mrs Ehi Obaseki said this in Ilorin weekend during a Programme tagged Career Fair held at Kwara Polytechnic, Ilorin.

According to her, “What informed the programme was the need to create an equal opportunity for women in the labour market.

“There are lack of opportunities of women in the corporate world compared to their male counterparts.

“IBEDC is committed to gender equity and cultural diversity in order to create ideal working environment.

“The essence of the career fair is to provide a unique opportunity for learning, engagement and networking so as to give glimpse of what occurs in the world of works for students entering labour markets especially females.

Represented by Engr Lawal Christopher, Obaseki described the programme as the second career fair in the power sector.

In her remarks, Mrs Angela Olanrewaju, IBEDC Head, Branding and Corporate Communication, noted that the programme will be of great benefit to students of both gender in the school.

She added that, “We will teach them how to make themselves sellable because that has been the greatest challenge of most young graduates. They don’t have the basic skill and etiquette that will make them have the competitive advantage.

“We all know how the labour market is right now, it important for one to know what to input into one’s CV, the difference between the CV and the resume and how to prepare for interviews. Those are the essence of having this career fair”, She said.

Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr Dr Abdul Jimoh Mohammed in his address described the initiative as a timely effort considering the rate of unemployment in the country.

He urged the company to make it a perennial effort.

The event which was held in conjunction with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), was tagged “DISCO for Women” and attracted students across several departments in the School.
