A 21-year-old robbery suspect, Gabriel Paul Friday, who the police said was arrested while he and his gang were attacking some female traders along the Badagry expressway, Lagos, has asked for forgiveness from his victims.
Friday, 21, and his accomplices were said to have mounted an illegal roadblock at the MTN bus stop, Mile 2-Badagry expressway, on August 27, 2020, where they were robbing traders heading to the Badagry market.
The police alleged the robbers dispossessed their victims of cash, phones and other valuables.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, told our reporter on phone that the Command had received information that some hoodlums had been sighted at the MTN bus stop robbing traders of their valuables.
Elkana said that acting on the information, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, quickly drafted operatives from the Morogbo Division and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad to the scene.
He added that the suspected robbers, on sighting the operatives, scampered to different directions to evade arrest but were chased.
“In the process, one of the robbers named Gabriel Paul Friday was arrested, while others escaped. He was immediately searched and a cut-to-size locally made pistol and five live cartridges were recovered from him,” the police spokesman said.
In his confessional statement to the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) handling his case, Friday asked for forgiveness from his victims.
“I became sober during the operation when I saw the way a member of my gang roughhandled an elderly woman simply because he wanted to collect her money. The money was in a local wallet tied around her waist. The woman is old enough to be our grandmother. I want to ask for her forgiveness,” he stated.
