Man arrested with 25 ‘stolen’ inverter batteries

The Lagos State Police Command disclosed on Tuesday that it has arrested a 28- year-old man for allegedly stealing inverter batteries, property of some telecommunication companies.

The police alleged that the suspect, Emeka Okun, was found in unlawful possession of 25 inverter batteries, which he claimed to have removed from a telecommunication mast at Ajah, a Lagos suburb.

Okun was said to have been arrested inside the Arena market, Oshodi, while he was attempting to sell the stolen batteries.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, described the suspect as “a criminal notorious for stealing batteries from telecommunication facilities.”

Elkana told our correspondent on Tuesday that, “On July 27, 2020 at about 10am, the officer-in-charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, (SARS), Lagos Police Command, Chief Superintendent Kehinde Johnson, acting on the strength of a piece of information, detailed some detectives from his unit to go after the suspect involved in the information.

“On arrival at the Arena market, Oshodi, the detectives arrested Emeka Okun with a large number of inverter batteries in a vehicle. He confessed to have burgled a telecommunication site at the Ajah area of Lagos, where he stole the inverter batteries.

“It was revealed that the suspect and others at large had been stealing back-up batteries belonging to telecommunication companies in Ajah and its environs. Investigation is in progress.”
