Five persons have died after a flood destroyed thousands of houses and farmland in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Daily Trust learnt that several livestock and crops were also lost to the ravaging flood.
Confirming the incident, the Sole Administrator of the area, Zakari Muhammad Shinaka said over 2000 houses were destroyed at Rimawa town alone.
He added that several houses and farmland had been destroyed at Katsira, Kagara, Gorau, Birjingo, Shinaka, Kagara and part of Sabon Garin Dole.
Other places affected by the flood were Rimawa, Tulaske, Kwakwaza, Illela Huda and Danwaru among other riverine communities.
Among crops destroyed were rice, millet, guinea corn and maize.
He explained that an elderly man and two of his children died from a collapsed building at Gebe, while two persons lost their lives at Giyawa village as a result of the disaster.
He, however, said that Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has since directed them to take inventory of the losses.
The governor also directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to ensure timely provision of relief materials to the affected persons and to liaise with NEMA for more support to the victims.
On its part, Shinaka said the local government council had provided some of the communities with an empty sack which they used for embankment.
