A Taraba State-based non-governmental organisation, Ciroma Yakubu Charity Foundation, has warned that if the current rise in rape cases is not quickly checked, it might discourage girl-child education in the north.
At a campaign in Jalingo, the state capital, the foundation said the warning was imperative because school girls were more at risk in many communities in the country.
The coordinator of the foundation, Alhaji Ahmed Bala Gassol, told North -East Trust in an interview shortly after the rally that in the north, the girl-child were being encouraged to go to school but incidents of rape if not check would discourage many parents from sending their girl-child to school.
“The society needs to protect women against rape and also protect the right of women while there is the need also for our legislators to review existing laws against rape,” he said.
The campaign, which was attended by thousands of women including students, condemned rampant cases of rape on girls across the country.
Speakers at the rally lamented over the rise in rape and other abuses of women’s right and called for decisive action against those arrested in connection with such crimes in the state in particular and the country in general.
They called on states and national assemblies to come up with strong legislation that would put rapists permanently behind bars.
