Flood: NEDC supports ravaged communities, 1000 IDPs in Adamawa

Eleven communities affected by recent flooding as well as over 1000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Adamawa State have received food and non food items from the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

Presenting the donation to IDPs at Malkohi camp in Yola South Local Governmet Area, the Senior Technical Advisor to the managing director of NEDC, Prof. Bobboi Umar, said the commission had supported more than 1000 people at the camp.

He noted that the NEDC, under the leadership of Mohammed Goni Alkali, was making effort to reach out to more displaced persons living in other camps as part of its intervention in the sub region.

The commission also flagged off distribution of materials to the eleven communities affected in the recent flood incident in the state.

“Today, we are flagging off distribution of relief materials to about 11 communities affected by flood in Yola South and Yola North areas.

“Items donated include foodstuff, cooking oil, blankets, clothing materials, detergents and sanitisers.

“All the interventions are meant to ease hardship and bring succour to the affected communities and populace,” he said.

Responding on behalf of the state government, Dr Mohammad Sulaiman, who is the executive secretary of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), commended the leadership of NEDC for the quick and timely response to the situation in the North East.

“The commission is advising communities, especially those along riverine and flood-prone areas, to relocate to safer places because there is possibility we are going to experience torrential rainfalls in August and September, which may likely cause heavy floods,” Sulaiman said.
