Reps probe utilization of N1.3trn power intervention fund

The ad-hoc committee of the House of Representatives investigating the power sector on Thursday sought to know how the N1.3trn injected into the sector since its privatization in 2014 was utilized.

The chairman of the committee, Alhassan Doguwa, who spoke when the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emeifile, appeared before the committee, said all the agencies that benefited from the fund must explain how it was utilised.

He said the committee discovered discrepancies in the figures given by the CBN the Ministry of Finance and the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Plc on the interventions in the sector.

Earlier, Emiefele, represented by CBN Deputy Governor (Operations), Shonubi Adebisi, noted that all the interventions by the apex bank were in form of loans.

He said N213bn was used to set up the intervention fund in 2015 out of which N189.1bn was drawn down.

He said N60.8bn had been refunded leaving an outstanding balance of N120bn.
