The Federal Government has been urged to revive the Sapele Port in Delta State to reduce the burden and traffic on the Apapa wharf in Lagos.
President-General of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Worldwide, Dr. Moses Taiga Taiga, said the Sapele port being used by the Nigerian Navy, has nine bases of which the Navy uses only one.
Speaking with newsmen in Lagos, Taiga said this would bring development to other zones of the country.
“Our Sapele Port that was given to the Navy, is currently underutilized, should be restored as a full operating port. It doesn’t matter if the Navy wants to keep the base they are using.
So also is the Warri Port. Government should develop the Okwagbe/Ganagana Port in Ughelli South Local Government.”
He also called on the Federal Government to fulfil its promise to return Uvwie and Okpe lands, which were freely given to the military, but are now being used for private purposes.
Taiga commended the Federal Government for honouring some prominent Urhobo sons by naming some railway stations along the Itakpe/Ajaokuta/Aladja/Warri Corridor after them.
