Nigerian soldier jailed 55 years for killing WHO worker

A General Court Martial instituted by the Nigerian Army in Abuja on Wednesday sentenced Lance Corporal Ibrahim Babaginda to 55 years imprisonment for culpable homicide, burglary and theft.

Babangida was alleged to have killed one Mr. Bello Abdullahi Aliyu and stolen his car at Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State in 2014.

The victim, Aliyu, was then a staff member of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the state.

Babangida was said to have stolen a mobile phone and N600,000 from various persons.

The President of the Court Martial, Major-General Priye Fakrogha, reading the judgment, said the soldier would serve a term of 40 years in jail for homicide.

Fakrogha, also said Corporal Babangida would serve a prison term of five years concurrently for pleading guilty to the second, third and fourth charges.

The GCM verdict is subject to the confirmation of the Nigerian Army Council.
