Edo 2020: Coalition hails APC for appointing Ganduje to head Campaign Council

A coalition of 18 civil rights organisations under the auspices of Edo Coalition for Democracy and Freedom (ECDF) has commended the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) for appointing the Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abullahi Ganduje to head the campaign council for the forthcoming elections in the state.

Addressing the press after a meeting in Benin city, the group described the governor of Kano State as a quiet performer and bridge-builder who has transformed one of the biggest commercial cities in Nigeria.

The group further dismissed a vocal minority that is critical of the governor as mischievous and ignorant lot.

Interim Coordinator of the group, Prince Charles Osagie, said: ”We are a group of civil society and rights-based groups drawn across the 18 local governments of Edo state.

”We are irreversibly committed to the principles of democratic accountability, responsiveness in leadership and transparency. We are here to once again commend the choice of Governor Ganduje as the Chairman of Edo State APC Campaign Council.

”For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to declare that 18 of us safely returned from a fact-finding mission to Kano State on Thursday before embarking on this press conference.

”Part of our mission was to assess the performance of the Governor of Kano. We wish to declare that we were satisfied by the level of infrastructural development we saw on ground in that state.

”We are no more surprised as we now know why the governor was re-elected in 2019 by Kano citizens despite mounting propaganda by the opposition. We wish to say that we want such level of development replicated in Edo State by our Governor-in-waiting Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu.

”We were pleased to observe that Kano State has established a functional anti-corruption agency and became one of the pioneer members of the Open Government Partnership (OGP).”

The group called on the citizens of Edo State especially the youth to remain vigilant and not to allow themselves to be used as agents of violence and election rigging to subvert the sacred will of the people.

The group also confirmed their interest in monitoring the election to ensure strict compliance to the practice of one man, one vote.
