Reps seek special courts for rapists’ trial

The House of Representatives Tuesday urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to establish special courts for speedy trials of sex offenders and gender-based violence.

This followed the adoption of a motion by Unyime Udem (PDP, Akwa Ibom) who noted that as Nigeria was battling the coronavirus pandemic, it was also being confronted with increased rape cases and gender violations at an unprecedented scale.

He recalled that the Nigerian Police Force had officially reported over 717 rape cases between January 2020 and May 2020.

The house condemned rape and all other gender-based violence over the past months in the country.

It mandated its Committees on Women Affairs and Social Development, Federal Judiciary and Human Rights to liaise with relevant government’s regulatory agencies and ensure compliance with the appropriate resolution of the house and report back within two weeks.
