Emergency officials in Lagos announced yesterday that they have found the body of a missing 17-year-old girl, identified as Ayisat, who was washed away by flood during Monday’s downpour.
The state emergency management agency (LASEMA) was alerted of the incident after the torrential rains and the teenager was declared missing.
LASEMA said its officials commenced a search of all major and minor drains and drainage canals in and around the Alapafuja axis of the Surulere Low-Cost Housing Estate in Surulere Local Government, Lagos. The Search-and-Rescue operation was extended beyond the immediate locality of Surulere to other local governments/local council development areas trailing the water/flood flow, the agency added. The latest incident happened two days after a similar downpour last week also swept away a four-year-old girl, Azeezat, at Papa Ashafa, Agege, also in Lagos.
Giving an update on the development in a statement yesterday, the Director General, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said Ayisat’s dead body was later found in the Onilegogoro canal, Surulere, Lagos, at about 8.30am on Tuesday, June 23, 2020, and had been buried by the community members beside the canal.
