How bandits displaced One thousand women in Katsina

Attacks in Katsina State by bandits have forced no fewer than one thousand women in Faskari to leave their town and trek more than 30 miles to relocate to Funtua were they are taking refuge.

According to one of the women, more than 19 of them are now sharing one room and hardly get what to eat from neighbours.

Speaking to BBC Hausa, Amina aged 50, said bandits kill their husbands on daily basis leaving them with children, while their lives are being exposed every day.

She said they trekked for about 30 miles with their children from Faskari to Sheme were a car took them to Funtua, the place they are staying presently.

“We could not stay in our town because of bandits. They have been attacking our neighbouring villages and they killed more than 50 people in the town of Karisau, they also killed more than 7 in another village.

“We hardly get food here. We have food at home but we have to leave it there to save our lives. Sometimes our husbands used to get some little things for us outside. We need help from the government, we need food and we need them to protect us”, she complained.

She further lamented the fact that the bandits used to spend hours killing people in villages before the government could send security personnel.

Research by women Da’awa said that more than 4,500 women form 19 villages have been displaced by bandits and are now in Funtua and Faskari.
