The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced the provision of an additional $234.5m in development assistance to support and fulfill the goals outlined in the 2015 bilateral Development Objectives Assistance Agreement (DOAG) between the U.S. and Nigeria.
According to the US embassy, this brings the total support since the five year DOAG agreement started to $1.8 billion.
A statement from the US embassy in Abuja yesterday said more than $160m of the new funding would finance new and existing activities to improve health care, while another $34m was allocated to improve agriculture and water systems.
The statement also disclosed that $21m was allocated to support education, while $19.5m was allocated to strengthen good governance.
The USAID Mission Director, Stephen M. Haykin, said, “Nigeria has tremendous potential and holds immense influence over the future of the continent and with this notification, the United States deepens its commitment to Nigeria in meeting its development challenges”.
