Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in Edo State have foiled an attempt to smuggle 83 kilograms of cannabis concealed in eight sacks of garri in the state.
It was gathered that the drugs meant to be ferried out of the state amidst the COVID-19 lockdown were intercepted at Aviele trailer park, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.
The Edo State NDLEA Commander, Mr. Buba Wakawa, who disclosed this to journalists yesterday in Benin, said the seizure was recorded through intelligence report.
“Officers attached to the Auchi Area command, acting on intelligence report raided the popular trailer park at Aviele where the dried weeds of cannabis hidden inside eight sacks of garri were intercepted while preparing to smuggle the drugs out of the state.’’
While describing the mode of concealment as “cunning,” he said preliminary investigation revealed that a local cannabis cartel in the area was behind the consignment.
The commander also disclosed that the command recovered 31 killogrammes of cannabis at a forest in Uzebba, in Owan West Local Government of the state.
