Suspected armed robbers on Thursday shot dead a middle-aged man, Hussain Ibrahim and injured a mobile police sergeant, Idris Ibrahim, in Gofidna community located along Zuba – Dei-Dei road, Abuja.
A resident of the community, Kabiru Adamu, said the incident happened around 2:30 am on Thursday when the suspected robbers, with guns and machetes, invaded the community.
He said the deceased tried to engage the robbers after a resident raised an alarm, and one of the robbers shot him in the stomach.
He said the robbers immediately proceeded to the house of a mobile police sergeant in the area and inflicted injuries on him with machetes.
According to him, the robbers, who operated for nearly one hour amidst sporadic gun shot, attacked some houses within the community and dispossessed their victims of valuables and undisclosed sums of money.
The Dakachi of Gofidna community, Sumaila Tukura, who also spoke with our reporter, confirmed the incident.
He said because of the sporadic gunshot by the robbers, he immediately ordered someone to turn on the generator of the community central mosque in order to brighten the community.
“It was even the generator of the central mosque I ordered that they should put on to brighten the community that later scared the robbers away,” he said.
He said the robbers also attacked and inflicted injuries on another man he simply identified as Bayero.
Tukura said five among the suspected robbers were arrested at their hideout in a thick forest some few meters away from the community after members of the vigilante mobilised to trace them.
He said the remains of the deceased man has been taken by his relative to Katsina State for burial, while the mobile police sergeant was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Zuba.
He said some policemen and soldiers later visited the community after the robbers had escaped.
Daily Trust report that Gofidna community is about two kilometers away from the army checkpoint near Dei-Dei- Kubwa expressway.
When contacted, the Zuba Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Alkali Lamido, confirmed the incident.
He also confirmed that five suspects have been arrested in connection to the robbery incident, adding that an investigation was still ongoing.
