Rector, Kaduna Polytechnic (Kadpoly), Professor Idris Muhammad Bugaje, has said that 18 blocks of students hotels will be renovated and upgraded to the standard of a three-star hotel at the cost of N600 million under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
Prof. Bugaje explained that the move was meant to improve the living condition of students whose population was close to 30,000, and that the hostel was expected to accommodate 4,000 students.
The rector told newsmen that the business certificate for the upgrade and renovation of the hostel had been handed over to the Federal Ministry of Education by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), and that the PPP was a major intervention from the commission and the first in the educational sector.
He said, “The renovation work is worth close to N600m for the 18 blocks, and our capital allocation every year for the past 10 years is N40m per annum. So, we decided to contact the ICRC and it guided us and approved full business scale and a certificate was awarded and we are waiting for the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to approve it.
He added that, “This will create standard accommodation for the students close to what you will find in two or three-star hotels across the world, and this is what we have seen in universities and polytechnics across the globe, and we believe that we need to improve the living condition of our students.”
He further said off-campus students presently paid N50, 000 per room and that the new hostel would cost between N20 and 25,000 when it is completed.
