The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, says the Federal Government is committed to the welfare and safety of journalists in their coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
He gave the assurance in Abuja on Thursday at a briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.
He was reacting to questions on the complaints of the reported harassment of some journalists in FCT and Lagos State by the police and soldiers.
“I spoke with the Commissioner of Police in Lagos yesterday (Wednesday) on the alleged harassment of some journalists on duty by the police.
“And based on our conversation, he recognised that journalists are on essential duty and everything possible will be done to support and protect them in the course of their duties.
“The Commissioner of Police assured that he had intervened in the alleged harassment and had provided safety for journalists in the Channels Television, the Nations Newspaper, among others,” Mohammed said.
He said the police boss also said he had directed his men to desist from harassing journalists in line of their duties and that any policeman found culpable would be sanctioned.
