Over 100 people die in Yobe in 1 week

Yobe residents are apprehensive over the sudden rise in deaths in some communities in the state.

Sources that spoke with our correspondent revealed that Potiskum, Bade and Nguru local government areas are worst hit by the development.

They include Late Mamman Ali graveyard with 49 burials; Anguwar Jaji graveyard with 11; NEPA graveyard with 18; Bayan Asibiti graveyard with 12; Gishiwa Dabuwa graveyard with 13; Nasarawa graveyard with six; and Garin Bingel with two burials with the period.

Confirming the development, Mai Anguwa Hassan of Potiskum said they buried 11 corpses out of the total 22 recorded in the town as of Wednesday.

A health worker in Nguru who pleaded anonymity lamented that mostly the aged were the ones dying of COVID-19 symptoms, and attributed the rampant deaths, which included the young and the aged to the regular movement of people to Kano for business engagements.

It was learned that the majority of deaths recorded in Gashua were women, elderly and young men.

An IDPs leader, Usman Lami, noted that he lost four women and two elderly men making a total of six persons within four days.

He said three women died of pregnancy complications while the aged people had a history of fever and diabetes.

He pleaded with the state committee on prevention and control of COVID-19 to intervene before the situation got out of hand.

The COVID-19 committee vice-chairman, who is also the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Muhammad Lawan Gana, said at a media briefing that the committee had swung into action to investigate the causes of the deaths, adding that they would not simply be attributed to the pandemic unless proven through medical tests.
