The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, has donated 200 face masks to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council.
The masks, produced by the institution’s Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Vocational Studies (CEDVS), were said to have been made of quality materials “in line with health standard.”
Presenting the mask to the Council, the school’s Rector, Dr Dayo Oladebeye, said the gesture was part of the corporate social responsibility of the institution to complement government’s efforts at ending the COVID-19 pandemic.
Oladebeye said the materials should be distributed among media houses in the state to assist journalists in protecting themselves in the course of discharging their duties.
The Rector described journalists as among professional workers in the front line in the fight against COVID-19.
The school also extended the donation to its staff members, people of the Aba Ebira community and the police station near the Polytechnic, “with the aim of also ensuring proper protection against COVID-19.”
Oladebeye had recently directed the CEDVS to produce over 1000 face masks for distribution to some residents of its immediate community.
He gave the directive while playing host to the CEDVS Director, Engineer Caroline Okereke, who had led her team to hand over 200 face masks the Centre produced for distribution to the Polytechnic’s staff members, in view of government’s directive that everybody should wear face mask compulsorily with effect from May 2020.
