COVID-19: Chinese community donates N170m items to Lagos Govt

The Chinese Community in Lagos on Friday donated cash and medical item valued at N170million to support the efforts of the state government in fighting COVID-19.

The items included Personal Protective Equipment comprising sanitizers, overall clothing, masks, gloves, etc, as well as ventilators, thermometers and a cheque of N35.3m.

The donors all representing the Chinese Community comprise the Consulate General of the Peoples Republic of China in Lagos; the Overseas Chinese Association in Nigeria; AfricaMed Group and Tecno Group.

The items were handed over to the officials of the state government led by the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde.

Following the coronavirus outbreak in Lagos and the subsequent 14-day lockdown which has been extended by another 14 days, the Chinese Consulate in Lagos had set up the initiative to mobilize Chinese funded enterprises in Nigeria, Chinese communities and Chinese compatriots to support the people of Lagos State.

In a letter written to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu by the Consulate General of the Peoples Republic of China, the Consulate said, “We are therefore committed to ensure we join His Excellency and his team to fight and completely eradicate the COVID-19 from Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.

“Nigeria is our second hometown. This is why the Chinese consulate general in Lagos has kick-started this by donating with other Chinese-funded enterprises, overseas Chinese associations and overseas Chinese the anti epidemic materials and cash.”

Chairperson, Chinese Women Association in Nigeria, Zhou Jun, said fighting the COVID-19 required the collaborative efforts of every stakeholder, saying, “Together, we will fight COVID-19.”
