Kano records first death from coronavirus, confirmed cases now 21

The Kano State Government has confirmed the death of a coronavirus patient in the state.

A tweet by the state’s Ministry for Health via its official Twitter handle: @KNSMOH, read: “Wednesday, 15th April 2020. As at 11:55 pm, 1 death of #COVID19 has been recorded in @KanostateNg.”

Details about the late patient were, however, not given by the ministry.

As at Wednesday night, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) recorded 16 confirmed cases for the state but the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, said it is now 21.

Kano is the most populated state in Nigeria, according to the census conducted in 2006.

It will be recalled that the index case of COVID-19 was confirmed in the state on Saturday.

Daily Trust reports that a 51-year-old medical doctor who was said to be treating a COVID-19 patient died on Wednesday also after allegedly contracting the virus from the patient at a private hospital.

The doctor died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), becoming the first medical personnel to die of the deadly virus in Nigeria.

Also, President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 to work as quickly as possible to break the chain of any community transmission of the novel deadly coronavirus disease.

The chairman of the task force and Secretary to Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, disclosed this in an interview with State House reporters after President Buhari had a video conference with the team on Wednesday.

The SGF appealed to Nigerians to be more patient as government adopted measures to contain the virus and ensure their safety.
