A combined team of rescuers from both the marine unit of the Lagos State Police Command and local divers were till yesterday evening combing the murky waters of Akodo, a riverine community in Ibeju Lekki, in search of the bodies of two teenagers who went swimming on Good Friday and were believed to have drowned.

The victims, who were identified simply as Dare, 16, and Fawaz, 15, were understood to have gone to swim at Akodo, along with a group of friends.

The police said that both Dare and Fawaz were declared missing by members of the community after all efforts by their friends to rescue them proved abortive.

The police said that a search party from the Marine unit and local divers were deployed minutes after the news was received.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said, “On Friday April 11, at about 3pm, the police received a distress call that one Dare, 16-years-old, and Fawas, 15-years-old, both residents of the Epelemeje Orofun community, Akodo, Ibeju-lekki, allegedly drowned while playing in the community beach.

“The Command has deployed its Marine Police Team to the area on search and rescue operations. The Command advises parents to monitor their children and ensure they remain at home during this lockdown period,” he added.
